At Lake View Chiropractic, we proudly offer Shiatsu massage therapy, a deeply therapeutic form of bodywork rooted in Japanese healing traditions, provided by Heather Hall, LMT of Creative Massage & Other Techniques, Inc. Heather practices Shiatsu massage within our facility, bringing her expertise to help patients restore balance to their body and mind, and achieve relaxation, pain relief, improved energy flow, and whole-body well-being.
What Is Shiatsu Massage?
Shiatsu -which means “finger pressure” – is a holistic bodywork practice that uses intentional pressure and massage along your body’s energy pathways (meridians) of the back, legs, feet, stomach, arms, ribcage, face, neck, and head. Unlike Western massage styles that focus mainly on muscles, Shiatsu works with pressure points and rhythmical techniques using the thumbs, palms, and sometimes elbows and knees to help unblock tension, stimulate circulation, and promote natural healing.
Heather tailors each Shiatsu session to your unique needs, adjusting pressure and focus to support your comfort and goals – whether you want relaxation, pain relief, or improved energy balance.
How Shiatsu Works
Shiatsu therapists guide energy (often called Qi or Ki) through balanced, mindful pressure along specific points on the body. This approach helps release muscle tension, encourages better circulation and lymph flow, and supports your body’s innate ability to self-regulate and restore harmony.
Traditionally, Shiatsu sessions are conducted on a mat on the floor with the client fully clothed. Sessions at Creative Massage & Other techniques are performed on a massage table with client disrobed to the level of their comfort while appropriately draped and professional boundaries upheld at all times, to enable access to skin- for application of finger pressure followed by massage with oil.
Wearing all cotton clothing to and after the session is suggested to allow your body to release the stored Qi/stress/pain that was released during your Shiatsu treatment.
Please note, this is not a feel-good treatment, rather a therapeutic modality that addresses stagnation (lack of blood flow/accumulation of cellular waste) in the body, often causing light to moderate bruising, even with light pressure. Heather will regularly inquire about pressure during treatment to ensure you are comfortable at all times. Clients are encouraged to communicate if they would like less pressure at any time during their treatment and Heather will happily adjust her pressure accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Shiatsu painful?
It can be — Shiatsu is applied to pressure points, which are usually tender when circulation is blocked in that specific area. However, pressure is always tailored to your comfort. With lighter pressure, discomfort is greatly reduced. While deeper pressure can be used where beneficial, gentle techniques are equally effective.
How often should I get Shiatsu?
Frequency depends on your goals. Many clients start with weekly sessions for pain or stress management, then transition to monthly maintenance.
Do I need to remove my clothes?
Yes – to the level of your comfort. Your entire body from the neck down will be draped with a sheet, with only one area, the area of the body that is being worked (back, arms, legs/feet) undraped at a time. Appropriate and professional draping will be used at all times.
Is Shiatsu covered by insurance?
Insurance coverage varies. We can provide documentation if you plan to submit claims to your provider.
